A city voted World Capital of Gastronomy – the stuff foodie dreams are made of!

Taste the finest

If your idea of discovering a destination means tasting everything it has to offer, then Lyon is the place to come! With so many excellent choices, the only difficulty is deciding where to eat. As the saying here goes, “qui saute un repas n’est pas lyonnais!” (which, roughly translated, means “Skip lunch?! You ain't from round here, are you?”). From fine restaurants to the famous local bouchons, home-made organic and veggie burgers, falafel and donut shops, as well as tea rooms and coffee shops (for those with a sweet tooth), Lyon is tasty from starter to dessert.

Lyon, World Capital of Gastronomy

It was in 1935 that food critic Maurice Edmond Sailland, A.K.A. Curnonsky, crowned Lyon “world capital of haute cuisine”. Decades have passed and haute cuisine is still central in Lyon, particularly influenced by the great Paul Bocuse and the Mères Lyonnaises (talented female professional cooks, many of whom had no formal training).

Where can I try Lyon’s cuisine?

To get to know Lyon’s haute cuisine, why not head from speciality to speciality, and from tasting spot to tasting spot on a gourmet guided tour? It’s a great way to get to know Lyon with your eyes… but above all with your taste buds!

Where can I buy Lyon specialities?

Fancy taking home a few grattons (pork scratchings), saucissons briochés (brioche sausage rolls), Rosettes de Lyon (cured saucisson), or tartes à la praline (praline tart) to make the gourmet experience last a little longer? There’s no doubting you’ll find something to tickle your fancy in the Halles de Lyon, a dangerously delicious centre of gourmet excellence, but also in many grocer’s shops, delicatessens, cake shops, etc. spread across the city.
