An Armenian princess, very modern in her outlook and a figure of empowerment, falls head over heels in love with Khosrow, and it is this story of impossible love, with all its twists and turns, that is recounted in this world première.

This tale, recounting the impossible love story between of Persian King Khosrow and the Christian princess of Armenia Shirine is full of twists and turns marked by curses and death. The story, which spans three generations, was adapted from the work of the 12th century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi by Atiq Rahimi.

A Persian fairytale
In 2013, Thierry Escaich wrote Claude, with a libretto by Robert Badinter, for the Lyon Opera. For this new work, the world-renowned composer and organist enlisted the services of a very special librettist: the Franco-Afghan writer Atiq Rahimi, winner of the 2008 Goncourt literary prize for Syngué Sabour. Here, Escaich tackles a completely different world - that of myths and legends - from Claude’s prison setting, yet we can still identify the composer's touch, his famous “liturgy of anguish” and his unique musical sensibility, enhanced for the occasion with oriental colors inspired by traditional Iranian music. With Shirine, which is also a reflection on representation, the composer allows himself to write in a more poetic style, moving more toward the world of the Persian fairytale. The staging by Richard Brunel (who directed Alexander von Zemlinsky’s The Chalk Circle at the Lyon Opera House in 2018) and a cast made up of wonderful young singers (Julien Behr and Hélène Guilmette in the roles of Khosrow and Shirine) support this approach.
