Rigoletto, court jester to a notorious seducer the Duke of Mantua, secretly protects his daughter Gilda from admiring looks and danger because of a curse pronounced by Count Monterone. However, the duke kidnaps and seduces Gilda, who falls in love with him. Dishonoured, Rigoletto hires a swordsman to kill the duke. But Gilda takes his place and it is she who is killed, thereby fulfilling the curse.

Collision of two universes
A dark masterpiece based on a censored and unsuccessful play by Victor Hugo, Le Roi s'amuse (though Verdi changed the characters to avoid censorship), Rigoletto triumphed at the Fenice opera house in Venice in 1851. A work of constant tension that digs deep into the Verdian themes of family secrecy and abusive power, this is the first part of the trilogy which includes Il trovatore and La Traviata. The composer, always quick to put a voice into the spotlight, here celebrates the baritone in the tortured role of the jester Rigoletto, who embodies the contradictions of human nature. The staging is entrusted to Berlin director and filmmaker Axel Ranisch, who here for the first time tackles a work by Verdi via his own quirky universe, imbued with melancholy burlesque, his love of the circus and trash poetry. Transposed to a Berlin suburb in the 90s, the collision of these two artistic universes is guaranteed to give off sparks, and this is even more the case under the breathtakingly lively and masterful musical direction of Verdi specialist Daniele Rustioni.
