Lugdunum - Musée et Théâtres romains
17 rue Cléberg - 69005 Lyon 5ème
Gladiator fights, chariot races, plays, pantomimes and more. This exhibition at Lugdunum – Museum and Roman Theatres reveals the making of Rome’s great popular shows.
What was entertainment really like in Antiquity? What occasions were shows held on? And what were the entertainment venues, some of which have survived through 2000 years of history?
Explore the places where shows were held, as you discover the Roman world of theatres, amphitheatres and circuses, and learn about the shows themselves, including gladiator fights, chariot races, plays, pantomimes and more.
With the aim of amazing spectators and building social cohesion, these shows glorified the city and power of Rome. Organisers found ingenious ways to put on ever more impressive spectacles. While they were open to all sections of society, from affluent aediles to slaves, they reflected Rome’s hierarchical system and people could not sit wherever they pleased!
Lyon (or Lugdunum as it was then known) being one of the few Roman cities that boasted the whole range of entertainment venues, the exhibition goes beyond the museum onto the site of the ancient theatres and the Amphitheatre of the Three Gauls.
