Musée des Confluences
86 quai Perrache - 69002 Lyon 2ème
A fairy tale forest, a witch’s hat, conjuring tricks and black magic… The images that are evoked by the word ‘magic’ are many and varied.
From 15 April 2022 to 5 March 2023, at Musée des Confluences.
Throughout its long history, all over the world, magic has straddled belief and knowledge, good and evil, secrecy and spectacle.
Designed in two parts, this exhibition has been co-produced by the Musée des Confluences and the Muséum de Toulouse. In 2021, part 1 – ‘Magies-Sorcelleries’ (Magic and Sorcery) – in Toulouse, looked at magic through the lens of scientific and occult knowledge.
At the Musée des Confluences, part 2 will explore the relationship between societies and magic as a social phenomenon, which is both timeless and universal. The exhibition design will take visitors into a strange forest, while the furnishings are inspired by geometric symbols used in magic.
Through the 450 or so exhibits, including natural science specimens, archaeological finds and ethnographical objects, as well as some amazing devices, visitors will be able to experience how magic changes the ordinary course of events, while bringing meaning to them.
