Musée de l'Imprimerie et de la communication graphique
13 rue de la Poulaillerie - 69002 Lyon 2ème
In 2022, the Museum of Printing and Graphic Communication is holding the first international retrospective dedicated to Susan Kare. From 14 April to 18 Septempber 2022.
Susan Kare is one of those graphic designers whose work everybody is familiar with, but most people wouldn’t recognise their name or face. Ever since the use of computers became widespread, her creations have been a part of our daily lives. Hired by Apple in 1982 to “humanize” the first Macintosh, Susan Kare has created icons that we all use on a daily basis and is considered to be one of the pioneers of pixel art.
As the first international retrospective of the graphic designer’s work, the exhibition looks back at the various facets of her creativity and inspirations, as well as the clear visual influence of her work on our digital lives. It offers a chance to discover images of icons from around the world, from Lisbon to Seoul, as well as Japanese coats of arms and video games.
The museum wants to highlight the work of women in graphic design industries, from the 1900s to the present day.
The exhibition is curated by Joseph Belletante, heritage conservator and director of the Musée de l'Imprimerie et de la Communication Graphique (Museum of Printing and Graphic Communication), with the participation of Alice Savoie, typeface designer and teacher-researcher in History of Typography (ECAL Lausanne, ANRT Nancy, University of Reading).
