At a time when hieroglyphic inscriptions were rare in collections, Artaud provided Champollion with original texts, which were an essential source to understand this Ancient Egyptian writing system. He also played an important role through his contacts with high-profile Egyptian antiques merchants and collectors, including the famous Bernardino Drovetti.
The exhibition will present Artaud’s role throughout Champollion’s life and show the importance of Ancient Egypt for Lyon from the seventeenth century onwards.
