Participating is another story (Hello New Year’s resolutions). While waiting to don your tracksuit, let’s explore a number of large facilities in the city and the Greater Lyon area where athletes of all standards practice their sport.
How could anyone forget the flagship venue based in Décines-Charpieu. The ground for the future exploits of Olympique Lyonnais, this stadium with almost 60,000 seats also stages enormous concerts, which are sporting feats in their own right.

Opened in 1995, the 5,600-seat venue has been thrilled by the exploits of ASVEL, the legendary French basketball club. DR, JB, AD, TP, GB, EJ, AG (who never actually played there) are all famous names that appear on the ceiling of this Villeurbanne temple to sport.

Once the Holy of Holies for the greatest victories of Olympique Lyonnais men’s team, it is now home to its female equivalent, as well as to LOU Rugby, a safe bet in the Top 14, as well a number of major athletics events.

Gymnase Mado Bonnet

Charlemagne Ice Rink
With a capacity of 4,200 seats, this impressive municipal facility does not just welcome recreational skaters, it is also the venue for ice dance, figure skating and even ice hockey.

Parc de la Tête d’Or
Although it is a mecca for joggers (as described by Mélina here, the park is also the venue for the ATP 250 Open Parc tennis tournament, on the velodrome site.

The Rhône and Saône
Lyon is blessed with numerous waterways. It is not unusual to see kayakers and rowers on the water and, in the area around the confluence of the two rivers, people water jousting and even paddle boarding.
Palais des Sports de Gerland
Even though it is showing the signs of age, the PSG regularly hosts top-tier competitions, including a WTA tournament, supercross, martial arts demonstrations and dancesport, etc.
Right alongside it, the Petit Palais des Sports de Gerland is home to the ASUL volleyball club

Stade de la Duchère - Balmont
Without doubt, the most exciting venue in the entire region. The Stéphane Diagana athletics hall is a mecca for professional track and field athletes. The venue is thrilled by the footballing exploits of AS Duchère and it also hosts rugby (union or league) and field hockey matches.

Stade de la Sarra
Fans of American football are in for a treat: they can watch the Lyon Gones train and take part in various competitions here. For its part, the Stade des Peupliers in Villeurbanne is the home venue of the Falcons de Bron. So, get your helmets on!
