La biennale de Lyon

The start of Autumn means one thing: the biennale! On one year, Greater Lyon hosts the Contemporary Art biennale, from September to December; the following year, it’s the turn of the Dance biennale. These two cultural events take place in various locations throughout the metropolitan area and attract thousands of people.
So which one will it be this year? It’s the turn of dance! The main highlight has to be the biennale parade, where residents are invited to take part.

Europe's largest choreographic parade is preparing its 14th edition. It will open the Dance Biennial on Sunday 10th September 2023, celebrating the meeting and the complicit dialogue between art and sport one year before the Olympic Games.

As usual, the Dance Biennial will offer performances in the major theatres and institutions of Lyon and the metropolitan area, but it will also be exported to the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region with around thirty performances.

The Usines Fagor is the real headquarters of this edition, offering the public the opportunity to attend shows but also exhibitions, to participate in meetings and to dare to practice dance. Every Friday and Saturday, you can enjoy the Club Bingo and its unique atmosphere that invites you to dance.

Performances also take place in the public space, on the markets and in the squares of Lyon and Villeurbanne.

Music and concerts in Lyon in September

Does September mark the end of the music festivals? Thankfully, in Lyon and the surrounding area, we make the most of the Indian summer with events such as the ‘Vendanges musicales’ in Charnay and ‘Les Francophonides’ in Pierre-Bénite. It also marks the beginning of a new programme of live music in venues around the metropolitan area!

Exhibitions in Lyon in September

September is marked by the European Heritage Days (also known as ‘EHD’), which has invited us to explore the multi-faceted heritage of Lyon every year since 1984! Another event not to be missed in September is the ‘Tupiniers du Vieux-Lyon’, which, every year since 1986, has brought together more than a hundred potters from all over France and beyond, on and around the square of Place Saint-Jean.

A month of sports in Lyon

In Lyon, the start of autumn offers many opportunities to get sporty. They include various paddling sports with Lyon Kayak, and a chance to see Lyon from a different perspective, namely through a choice of cycling routes for all levels, with Lyon Free Bike. Lastly, September will be special in Lyon this year, as the 2023 Rugby World Cup will be taking place in France, with several pool matches to be played at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium.
