His son, Charles Couty, wanted to pay tribute to his father by creating this museum dedicated to Jean Couty’s work, but also to contemporary art with exhibitions by other artists.
The museum displays 120 paintings by Jean Couty, some 30 works on paper, as well as various documents, archives, sketches and items that belonged to the artist.
His preferred themes? Lyon, his city, for which he had a true passion, as well as other places visited on his travels, and landscapes. From his architectural training, he retained a soft spot for painting buildings, such as Roman churches, wharfs, building sites, Fourvière and La Croix-Rousse.
His very colourful style plays on contrasts, with a great expressiveness but without violence, demonstrating his attachment to his deeply humanist values.
The route through the museum displays the painter’s periods, his techniques and themes, from his first works in the 1930s, depicting sites around his studio, up to his later travels.
A place to discover as much for the paintings as for the personality of the artist.
