Atelier de Soierie
33 rue Romarin - 69001 Lyon 1er
Discover a family workshop and its silk printing and colouring techniques: colouring of silk squares, tradition of the silk houses of Lyon, manufacture & sale of articles (squares, scarves, stoles, ties ...).
In Lyon, city of silk since the 16th century, the Atelier de Soierie is specialized in the printing & colouring of silks, which is the last delicate step in the long silk process. It uses several traditional techniques for this purpose: silkscreen-printing or printing à la Lyonnaise (stencils), block-printing (Indian) & hand-painting on the very local and exclusive so called velvet panne, a fabric made of silk chiffon and shaped velvet patterns, still woven and painted by hand, in Lyon only!
Created in 1890, this family business is managed by Gérard Genet, 4th generation of silk printers. He perpetuates the family tradition with the wish to keep this know-how alive.
This wellknown private production site is open to the public in order to pass on this heritage. It welcomes visitors from all over the world, individuals or groups, who discover traditional dyeing techniques with fabric decorators and printers. An unforgettable experience!
Specialized in art reproduction, the Atelier de Soierie prints squares and scarves for museums and art foundations all over the world.
With more than 3000 frames, 8000 printing blocks, l'Atelier de Soierie produces two collections per year of a wide variety of patterns & colors, created by artists or the team. The techniques used allow the creation of limited series and unique pieces, which can be discovered in the boutique on the second floor: a wide choice of items (stoles, scarves, squares, ties...), printed or hand-painted at the Atelier. Their realization requires a lot of know-how, involving 7 companies of the region! They deserve the Made in France label!
