Cities in the region

Last updated date : 19/01/2023

In the heart of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, on the banks of the Loire, Roanne is a charming destination. Located only 1 hour and 10 minutes from Lyon (via the A89 motorway), Roanne offers excellent food and a bucolic setting for your city break.

Discover Roanne

You can begin your break with a visit to the Musée Déchelette. Housed in a late-eighteenth-century town house, it displays quality collections, including an archaeological collection illustrating the living environment and daily life in Roanne during the Gallo-Roman period, an Egyptian collection, as well as a collection of ancient and contemporary ceramics (from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century).

Praluline® of Roanne

Food occupies an important position in Roanne. Head for the Halles Diderot market to experience the local high-quality produce of Roanne’s terroir, including andouille de Charlieu, Mons cheeses, Praluline® and Révillon chocolates. A mouth-watering proposition!

To accompany your tasty food, you may want to choose a Côte Roannaise wine (to be consumed with moderation of course). The Côte Roannaise vineyard was granted AOC certification in 1994. It now covers some 200 hectares and a dozen villages, including thirty or so winegrowers.

Historical centre of Roanne

For lovers of fine gastronomy, Maison Troisgros (3 Michelin stars), which recently moved to Ouches, and Restaurant Les Anges (1 Michelin star), invite guests to enjoy flavorsome and generous cuisine made with fresh ingredients...

Following a delicious meal, take a stroll through the old streets and alleys of the historic centre and discover the remains of a rich past, including pottery kilns, baptisteries and the dungeon of a former twelfth-century castle.

Continue until the marina, right in the town centre. Here, you can take a stroll along the Roanne-to-Digoin canal. By river boat, electric boat, on foot or by bike, enjoy the beauty and peace of the “canal tranquille” (as it is known locally).

A few kilometers away, Lac de Villerest and the Monts de la Madeleine will delight lovers of nature and wide-open spaces.
